We’ve seen some pretty fairy tale villages in our time, but this one really does take the biscuit – with water cascading through the beautiful Croatian village of Rastoke, thanks to rivers which flow through homes and under quaint wooden bridges
If you’re seeking a travel spot that resembles something plucked from a fairy tale, this destination might be perfect for you.
Streams flow through the Croatian village of Rastoke, with waterways winding between houses and beneath charming timber bridges.
These waters originate from the Slunjcica and Korana rivers, creating approximately 23 tiny waterfalls tucked between the structures.
This settlement, renowned for its remarkable natural splendour and historic mills dating back centuries, has protection from the State Directorate for Cultural and historical heritage.
The area is celebrated for its water-driven mechanical mills – with 22 of them in operation. Rastoke is equally noted for its striking architecture, featuring a distinctive blend of 17th-19th century buildings.
Beyond serving as a picturesque hidden gem for visitors today, the settlement holds considerable historical importance.
Its strategic location beside a major route meant it functioned as a commercial centre for traders of all kinds, including merchants, dealers and cattle traders.
The community suffered extensive damage during the 1990s Homeland War. Yet it was restored to its previous magnificence through assistance from the Croatian Ministry of Development and Reconstruction.
Approximately 30 families now call this place home, with plans to revive the watermills as commercial enterprises.
Tourists from across the globe have descended on the village to experience its peaceful cascades, with one TripAdvisor user describing it as a “wonderful blend of buildings and nature”.
Another visitor revealed they first stumbled upon it two decades ago and have remained captivated ever since, declaring: “One of our favourite places in the world.”
A third person commented: “Absolutely charming and with numerous bubbling steams flowing through it. We were also lucky enough to see a tightrope walker on a wire along the river. If you’re in the vicinity definitely worth a stop.”
The Instagram page official_fabtrip recently posted footage of the location, claiming: “If heaven had a village, this would be it.”
Based on the photographs captured at this stunning spot, it’s hard to disagree!
