Halifax is shutting 28 branches in the UK across May and June as part of wider closures in the Lloyds Banking Group – sites in London, Manchester and Cardiff are impacted
A major UK bank is set to close 28 branches in May and June.
Lloyds Banking Group is shutting the Halifax branches as part of wider closures. As many as 46 Halifax branches are set to close in 2026 and 2027.
Lloyds Banking Group announced a further 95 closures in February. The group includes Lloyds, the Bank of Scotland and Halifax. The most recent announcement brought the total number of sites closing to at least 168 for 2026 and 2027.
A spokesperson for Lloyds said: “Customers want the freedom to bank in the way that works for them and we offer more choice and ways to manage money than ever before.” It said the move was down to changing customer behaviour, as most account holders now manage their money online, Express reports.
After February’s announcement, it was confirmed Lloyds would lose 94 branches during 2026 and 2027, the Bank of Scotland would shut 28, with Halifax closing 46.
Lloyds is not the only banking group to retreat from the high street. Santander is also undergoing a major closure programme, similar to NatWest. All banks have cited online banking as the deciding factor.
Critics say bank closures will impact the most vulnerable, who have no access to internet banking, or who may not be able to travel further afield to other bank locations.
Halifax customers have been encouraged to access in-person banking services at its other brands, including Lloyds and Bank of Scotland, where they can deposit cash, make withdrawals and pay in cheques.
Account holders can also use banking hubs, which are shared spaces run by the Post Office, where customers of multiple banks can deposit and withdraw cash, get face-to-face support and manage their accounts.
As of February, there were 214 hubs up and running around the UK, with 58 additional hubs recommended.
