Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said the tragic fire was caused by an air fryer igniting nearby objects, with an investigation now underway
An 11-year-old girl tragically died in a fire at a Chinese takeaway, it has been confirmed. A 45-year-old man also died in the blaze.
Emergency services were called to the address in Grimoldby, Lincolnshire at 6:10am on Wednesday following reports of a fire at a Chinese restaurant. The occupants of the property were rushed to hospital and Lincolnshire Police confirmed on Thursday that a girl, aged 11, and man, aged 45, died following the blaze.
Five other people were taken to hospital, the force added, with a woman in her 30s described as being in a “serious condition”. Two men in their 40s and two children under ten have been released from hospital.
An investigation into the cause of the fire by Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue have confirmed the cause to be accidental and related to the use of an air fryer.
Chief Fire Officer Mark Baxter, of Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Upon arrival at the scene, crews were met with a well developed fire, which has tragically claimed the lives of two people, left another in a critical condition, and injured several others.
“Following fire investigations in conjunction with Lincolnshire Police and the regional fire investigations dog, we have determined this was started by an air fryer igniting nearby objects.
“This will be an extremely difficult time for the family, their friends, and the tight-knit community, and our thoughts and condolences go out to them all.”
Manby Middlegate was closed for a number of hours, with a diversion in place, before reopening shortly after 10am. Chief Superintendent Philip Baker, Head of Local Policing, said at the time “Our teams will be working throughout the day to establish the cause of the fire; this may take some time. I’d ask people not to speculate as to what may have happened and to let our investigation determine the facts.”
