Weeds can be a real pest in the garden, but there’s something you can buy that will banish them completely without the need for any chemical sprays
You’ve done the hard yards at the garden centre, picked out some gorgeous spring plants, spruced up your borders and now you’re watching your handiwork flourish. It’s all going swimmingly until one little issue pops up – weeds.
These stubborn little blighters have a knack for making your borders and gravel areas look messy, and there’s only so much bending over with a trowel and bin bag you can do before it starts to wear thin. While chemical weed killers often do a decent job of getting rid of them, they run the risk of harming other lovely plants nearby.
But fear not, there’s another solution that can wipe out weeds entirely, without the hassle of chemical spray bottles – weed membrane. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s essentially a sheet that goes on the ground and can be covered with things like gravel for a tidy finish.

Gardening Express offers a heavy-duty roll of 1m x 200m priced at £99.99. It might seem pricey but remember, that’s a large roll capable of covering a lot of ground.
If you’re looking to cover a smaller area then Amazon has iropro’s offering of 2m x 25m rolls priced at a more wallet-friendly £36.09, reports the Express. And if you need even less than that, Toolstation’s 1x14m landscape fabric is an even cheaper option at £14.98.
You might worry that using the fabric could block water and nutrients, but fear not, as it’s engineered to let the good stuff through while keeping those pesky weeds at bay. Gardening Express extols the virtues of their product, proclaiming: “Our Heavy Duty Garden Weed Membrane is constructed from high-quality materials that are designed to last for years. Our weed membrane is made from tough and durable fabric and can withstand heavy foot traffic, garden equipment, and extreme weather conditions.”
Not only that, but the blood-sweat-and-tear-saving sheet is also tough against UV rays, meaning the sun won’t have it crumble into dust. Just a little heads-up though – the package doesn’t come with pegs to secure it in your garden soil, so you’ll need to bag some separately, and a bundle of 50 pegs will set you back £13.99 on Amazon.
Meanwhile, the first and only review so far said: “Good, easy to lay, suppressing membrane which seems to be very effective with a layer of gravel on top. Very pleased with this as we will not have to spend hours weeding.”
