Glasgow gangster Steven Lyons was detained by police shortly after landing in Bali after he was identified as a ‘suspected leader of an international criminal organisation’

British gang boss Steven Lyons has been pictured in a bright orange prison jumpsuit while being escorted by Bali police officers with his hands cable-tied together.

Lyons – one of Scotland’s most high-profile gangland figures – was detained shortly after landing at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport on a flight from Singapore on Saturday, only days after he was deported from Qatar. Police in Bali said they had detained the 45-year-old after he was identified as a “suspected leader of an international criminal organisation”.

The request for Lyons’ arrest is believed to have come through Spain’s Guardia Civil. In a statement, the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office said: “Based on intelligence data, SL is strongly suspected of being the leader of an international criminal organisation.

“He is suspected of being the mastermind behind the operation of several fictitious companies and of being involved in money laundering.”

Lyons appeared furious in new images taken today, which showed him being escorted by police officers at the Bali police headquarters in Denpasar.

The crime lord is the head of the Lyons clan, which originated in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, and has been involved in a bloody battle with rival Glasgow-based group Daniel for more than 20 years.

Bugie Kurniawan, head of the office, said Lyon’s arrest reiterated that Indonesia “will never be a safe haven for international fugitives”.

Felucia Sengky Ratna, head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Immigration Bali, added: “This achievement demonstrates that immigration surveillance in Bali is effective, integrated, and responsive to transnational threats.”

Police Scotland confirmed Lyons’ arrest on Saturday and said the force is working with partner agencies across Europe.

Lyons had fled to Indonesia only days after being deported from Qatar. The crime boss left Scotland in 2006 and had been living in Dubai, but was expelled from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last September after a number of headlines on the Scottish gangster began to circulate.
