Marks and Spencer has shut down many stores across the country in recent years as part of its strategy to focus on food-only locations, while Poundland is reducing its store count with closures continuing into 2026
Marks and Spencer has shuttered numerous outlets nationwide in recent years, including a landmark branch that first opened its doors in 1929 earlier this year.
M&S has clarified that these closures form part of the retailer’s strategy to cut back on shops stocking food, clothing and homeware while concentrating on food-only outlets.
Meanwhile, supermarket giant Morrisons has axed over 100 cafes, florists, and pharmacies throughout this year.
Morrisons’ chief executive Rami Baitieh noted that certain cafes “had specific local challenges, and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space was the only sensible option”.
Budget retailer Poundland is trimming its 800-strong store portfolio down to between 650 and 700 locations, with additional closures planned for 2026, reports the Express.
