Cold Weather Payments are triggered if the average temperature where you live hits zero degrees or below over seven consecutive days

Cold Weather Payments have now been triggered in 802 postcode areas after Storm Goretti battered part of the UK with snow.

You may be awarded a Cold Weather Payment worth £25 if you claim certain benefits and the average temperature where you live hits zero degrees or below over seven consecutive days.

If you get several spells of freezing weather, then you can get multiple payments. Thousands of households have now received two lots of Cold Weather Payments, meaning they have received £50 in total this winter.

The latest Cold Weather Payment trigger saw 74 new postcode areas become eligible for payments on January 9. You can find a full list of all the postcode areas entitled to Cold Weather Payments so far this winter below.

You are eligible for a Cold Weather Payment if you claim one of these benefits or mortgage support:

• Pension Credit
• Income Support (if you get disability or pensioner premium, or you live with a child who is disabled, or you have a child under five living with you)
• Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (if you get disability or pensioner premium, or you live with a child who is disabled, or you have a child under five living with you)
• Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (if you get severe or enhanced disability premium, or a pensioner premium, or you live with a child who is disabled, or you have a child under five living with you)
• Universal Credit (if you’re not employed or “gainfully” self-employed, your partner is not employed or “gainfully” self-employed – you or your must also have a health condition or disability and have limited capability for work, or have a child under five living with you)
• Support for Mortgage Interest (if you have any of the following: severe or enhanced disability premium, a pensioner premium, a child who is disabled,or a child under five living with you)

If you’re due a payment, the money should be paid into your bank account automatically within 14 working day. However, you will need to apply if you have a baby or if a child under the age of five comes to live with you.

Cold Weather Payments are paid by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the scheme will run until March 31, 2026. They are not available in Scotland as Cold Weather Payments have been replaced by the Winter Heating Payment, which is worth £59.75.

Torsten Bell, minister for pensions, said: “As temperatures plunge, Cold Weather Payments will automatically get support directly to vulnerable households.

“Combined with the biggest ever Pension Credit take-up campaign and our Triple Lock commitment – set to increase the State Pension by up to £2,100 over this Parliament – we’re ensuring pensioners get the support they need this Winter.”
