Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have declared critical incidents as their hospitals are under increasing pressure

Six hospital trusts in the country have declared critical incidents due to “severe and sustained pressure” on their services.

On Monday, four trusts declared critical incidents, saying an increase in flu and norovirus cases, combined with staff sickness, contributed to exacerbating the situation. Today, two more trusts, both in Nottinghamshire, also declared critical incidents.

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) said since Christmas, high demand, winter infections and staff sickness had resulted in “significant and unacceptable delays” in its emergency department and hospital wards. The trust has urged the public to only use A&E “in an emergency or serious accident”.

Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said it was struggling with “sustained pressure” across its hospitals, adding the number of patients waiting to be admitted was higher than that of those discharged.
