Up to 5 inches of rain is set to hit as flooded is expected

02:06, 01 Dec 2025Updated 02:31, 01 Dec 2025

Travel disruption and flooding is likely to occur as the Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for the UK. The disastrous weather is expected to continue as weather forecasters predict a huge downpour to start December.

An amber weather warning has been issued in parts of Wales, with yellow weather warnings scattered across the rest of the UK with heavy rain likely to cause disruption. The Met Office have urged people to be prepared for flooding as the weather warning begins at midnight on Monday, December 1 and is in place all day.

Senior meteorologist for the Met Office Marco Petagna has suggested that a month’s worth of rain could fall in just 24 hours as downpours are expected across the nation, reports The Independent. Petagna said on Sunday: “Later today, we’ll start to see some wet and windy weather coming in from the west, and then for a very unsettled day for most parts of the UK going into tomorrow, particularly western parts of England, Wales and southwest Scotland as well.

“We could see up to 120mm of rain, so almost five inches of rain in a few places, that’s on top of what’s been a pretty wet month already. We’re likely to see flooding issues, particularly across South Wales, through tomorrow.”

Along with heavy rain comes a lot of disruption, with flooding and travel chaos on the horizon. The Met Office say that roads may potentially close along with the cancellation of bus and train services.

The heaviest rain is expected to move over south Wales between late Sunday and late Monday. Whilst rainfall amounts will vary persistent rain is likely to fall with the potential of landslides on both natural and infrastructure slopes.

Some travel companies have already addressed the wet conditions, with ScotRail placing speed restrictions on certain routes ahead of the rainfall. As well as the amber warning other places in Scotland and England are also hit with a yellow warning for rain.

In these areas spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions with some roads expected to close. The forecaster also warn that there could be power cuts.

It is suggested to prepare a flood kit ahead of the downpour to be ready for all eventualities.
