A British couple have ditched their UK life for a new start in Bulgaria, buying a house they’d never set eyes on for just £7,000.
Lewis and Jordan, who have now become an internet hit after sharing their story online, were fed up of their life in Bournemouth and were dreaming of a better life. The couple realised that just a three-hour plane ride away was their ultimate living situation waiting for them; they were able to get a big home and plenty of land they could call their own.
With two kids in tow, Lewis shared their vision: “In 2022 we had a dream of owning our own home and having farmland to raise livestock and to grow our own produce, however with an acre plot of land ranging anywhere from £300,000 to one million in the UK, this dream soon became pretty unrealistic.”
The pair, previously unable to secure a mortgage, refused to abandon their aspirations. “So instead of giving up on our dreams, we decided to look elsewhere.”, Lewis added. Now he counts himself “pretty lucky” that he calls Bulgaria his home.
Taking to TikTok, Lewis revealed: “About a year and a half ago, we drove up this driveway after a £1,821 mile journey because we decided it would be a good idea to purchase a house for £7,000 in Bulgaria. And we bought this house on the internet for £7,000 without even looking at it.”
“I think we got pretty lucky,” he added.
They’ve settled into a countryside cottage with a vast garden, three bedrooms, a bathroom, lounge, and kitchen in the main house. Lewis highlighted that the deal included an annex with three rooms – a craft room, workshop, and shower room – and one “unbelievably huge” barn.
On YouTube Lewis said: “We could never afford this much land in England.”
The family sold most of their stuff, loaded up a caravan, and moved to Bulgaria with their children Leo and Fae. Despite the fears, they found the move thrilling.
They’ve committed to five years’ residency in their new home, with the option to renew, according to Lewis. Their TikTok page @frombournemouth2bulgaria, where they post updates, has attracted thousands of comments about their bold move from Bournemouth life.
One person who also relocated to Bulgaria shared: “Did the same 5 years ago, 11 roomed house 1000 square metre garden, water well. Best move ever. It had been renovated a little. Price of a car in UK.”
Another commented: “Your garden is endless,” A third posted: “This is amazing! I would love to do something like this once my little ones are a bit older.”
One more agreed: “This is exactly what I want to do, well done for doing it,” Another individual revealed: “I am Romanian and lived in the UK for about 5 years. Left the UK 3 years ago, came back home opened a car repair shop – best decision I have made ever.”
Yet another noted: “It’s a nice idea. But maybe for when I’m like 70.”
