Advanced weather maps show snow could land in the UK within hours, with heavy rain expected to sweep across some parts of the country as well
New weather maps show which parts of Britain are about to be struck by a -7 Polar freeze – and when it will turn bitterly cold.
Brits are bracing for freezing weather conditions, with snow forecast to hammer much of the country. According to the latest weather maps, parts of the UK will be covered with temperatures plunging.
WXCharts show that the wintry conditions will cover a number of regions on December 19 and 20 – less than a week before Christmas. The maps suggest a 663-mile snow blast covering areas from Wick to Ipswich will hit the country.
Snow will begin to fall over the Scottish Highlands on the midnight of December 19. By 6am, the wintry weather will spread to Aberdeen and Portree, with eight inches of snow covering the areas. Hours later, the maps suggest freezing conditions will cover areas such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, and Perth, with temperature levels hovering at lows of -3 and -2C.
The snow will quickly spread down, with weather maps turning white for Newcastle, York, the Yorkshire Dales, Middlesbrough, and Carlisle. Most of these areas are expected to experience the lowest temperatures of 2C, according to the maps.
The Met Office’s long-range forecast between December 9 and 18 doesn’t forecast snow for the period. It reads: “A continuation of the broadly unsettled conditions is likely through this period. One area of low pressure, initially close to northwestern areas at the start of this period, should soon clear away, but it is likely that further areas of low pressure will develop over the North Atlantic.
“These will likely progress eastwards towards the UK, but could become quite slow-moving in the vicinity of the UK, as they butt up against higher pressure to the east and north.
“As a result, the wettest conditions are more likely in western areas, but all parts could see heavy rain at times. Strong winds are also likely at times, again more likely in the west. Temperatures are expected to remain close to or above normal.”
