A new poll has highlighted a major gap between perception and reality in UK oral health, with 88% of adults not consistently following dentist-recommended oral care routine advice
Eight in 10 Brits think they are brushing their teeth properly – yet only 12% are actually sticking to the dentist-recommended routine. A survey of 2,000 adults revealed a stark gap between perception and reality regarding the UK’s oral hygiene habits, showing that 88% are not consistently following professional guidance.
More than two thirds (63%) spend less than the recommended two minutes brushing their teeth, while 16% only brush once a day. Furthermore, despite dentists emphasising the importance of daily flossing, 74% admit they don’t bother, and half still use a manual toothbrush rather than an electric one.
The research also found that 11% don’t use a fluoride toothpaste, as advised, while 17% confessed they weren’t even certain what type of toothpaste they use.
The results come at a time when, according to the Oral Health Foundation, many people continue to struggle with accessing dental care, making good oral hygiene practices at home more crucial than ever.
The foundation also reports that almost one in four UK adults have untreated tooth decay, and 9% show signs of severe gum disease.
Commissioned by Oral-B, the research coincides with the launch of its Brush for Better campaign, which sees the brand take its purpose-built dental bus on a nationwide tour from July to September 2026 – bringing oral health education, expert advice and practical guidance directly into communities across the UK.
Once the tour concludes, the specially designed dental bus will be handed over to Dentaid – The Dental Charity – joining its fleet of mobile dental units, which deliver free dental treatment and oral health guidance to under-served communities.
David Ewan, Northern Europe senior director oral care, Oral-B, said: “Good oral health starts with the habits we practice every day at home, yet the research reveals a clear gap between perception and reality when it comes to how people care for their teeth. That’s why making expert advice accessible is so important.
“By the end of the bus tour in November, we want to have meaningfully increased the number of people following the recommended oral care routine.”
The research further revealed that oral health is frequently overlooked in comparison to other healthy habits, with many prioritising healthy eating (52%) and exercise (47%) over caring for their teeth and gums (37%).
Across the generations, younger adults appear most willing to improve their dental habits, with 32% of Gen Z stating they would enhance their routine if given better guidance.
It also emerged that 35% avoid smiling due to feeling self-conscious about their teeth, while 48% believe good oral health boosts their confidence.
Despite 77% turning to their dentist for oral health advice, 14% visit less than once a year, and a staggering one in 10 have gone five years without setting foot in a dental surgery.
Moreover, some are even turning to unconventional sources for guidance, with 10% using AI for advice on enhancing their brushing habits, while 17% consult social media for oral health tips, according to the OnePoll.com data.
Dentist Dr Eva Castro Perea said: “These results show there’s still a lack of awareness about what makes an effective oral care routine.
“Brushing twice a day for two minutes, using an electric toothbrush, flossing every day and replacing your brush head regularly are simple habits that can have a huge impact on oral health over time.
“Getting these everyday habits right at home is very important.”
