The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has several winter schemes that eligible households can qualify for, which amounts to up to £775 before April. Here’s what you need to know about the DWP’s winter support schemes.
Families throughout Britain could receive up to £775 in free benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to assist with energy costs, groceries and necessities before April.
The financial assistance is accessible through multiple DWP winter initiatives, including the Household Support Fund, the Winter Fuel Payment, the Warm Home Discount Scheme and Cold Weather Payments. These programmes are operational from now until March 31, 2026, which means qualifying families that meet the requirements could potentially receive hundreds of pounds in aid before April.
As with all state schemes, families must satisfy stringent criteria to be eligible, but with numerous winter payments on offer, it’s feasible for some to qualify for everything, potentially totalling up to £775 over the coming months
For example, the Household Support Fund allocates £742 million to local authorities in England to assist vulnerable families with essential living expenses, including utility bills, groceries and other necessities, reports the Express.

The funding runs from now until March 31, 2026, with local authorities independently determining distribution methods, meaning eligibility requirements may vary depending on your location. This means cost of living assistance will differ depending on your area, with various vouchers or grants available across the nation.
The timing of payments will also vary by location, meaning some households may have already received their support, whilst others face a longer wait – though all funding will be distributed before April. The DWP notes there may also be variations in eligibility criteria and application processes, as certain local authorities choose to distribute funds through local charities and community organisations, whilst some restrict household applications to once annually.
For instance, households in Staffordshire can receive a one-off £300 utility payment sent directly to their provider through the scheme, whereas Surrey County Council is issuing supermarket vouchers of up to £300 to qualifying households via its ‘Everyday Essentials E-voucher scheme’.
Calderdale residents can receive a maximum of two payments of £85, totalling £170 in support, whilst Doncaster Council will provide eligible households up to £300 towards food expenses, with other households qualifying for a £100 payment towards energy bills.
Meanwhile, households in Nottingham can access energy vouchers worth £98 and supermarket vouchers worth £75, totalling £173 in support, and Manchester residents receiving Council Tax support alongside a disability benefit can obtain £130. Pensioners born before September 22, 1959, residing in England or Wales are entitled to a Winter Fuel Payment valued between £100 and £300.
The sum you receive depends on your date of birth and personal circumstances during the qualifying week, which falls between September 15 and 21, 2025. The majority of Winter Fuel Payments are issued automatically in November or December, though some eligible households may still be awaiting their payment.
According to the DWP, anyone who hasn’t received correspondence about the payment, or whose money hasn’t arrived in their account by January 28, 2026, should get in touch with the Winter Fuel Payment Centre. The closing date to submit a claim for winter 2025 to 2026 is March 31, 2026.
The DWP’s Warm Home Discount Scheme launched in October and offers qualifying households a one-off £150 reduction on their electricity bill. Households in England or Wales will be eligible if they are the named account holder on their energy bill and receive any of the following means-tested benefits.
For those living in England or Wales, your electricity provider will apply the discount to your bill automatically. In Scotland, energy suppliers determine the scheme’s criteria, so households should contact their provider to verify their eligibility.
If you’re eligible, your electricity supplier will deduct the discount from your bill by March 31, 2026, ensuring you benefit from the energy bill support before April. If temperatures in your area plummet to 0C or lower for seven days in a row, you’ll qualify for a Cold Weather Payment.
This is issued automatically if you’re receiving an eligible benefit such as Pension Credit, Income Support or Universal Credit. The DWP will distribute the payment to qualifying households between now and March 31, 2026, meaning payments could be triggered sooner if another spell of freezing weather hits.
