Need to know

The DWP has issued an important update on Universal Credit with a key July 2026 deadline close at hand

Universal Credit latest as DWP issues update before deadline – need to know

  • The Department for Work and Pensions has issued an update for benefit claimants moving to Universal Credit.
  • More than 2.3 million people have been sent migration notices to switch from legacy benefits like income support and housing benefit. However, hundreds of thousands have yet to make the transition, risking losing their financial support entirely.
  • Claimants receive a ‘migration notice’ with a deadline to claim Universal Credit or face losing money. Official data shows that while 1.99 million people have successfully made claims, a significant number remain at risk.
  • Minister Stephen Timms told Parliament: “All customers have access to support throughout the process, including the Move to Universal Credit Helpline and independent Help to Claim support provided by Citizens Advice.”
  • The DWP has announced exemptions for vulnerable groups, particularly Employment and Support Allowance customers who may need personal appointees. Enhanced support includes tailored contact and visiting officer assistance for those who haven’t engaged.
  • Income-related ESA and certain Housing Benefit claims will end on June 30, though this deadline was extended in March. Citizens Advice warns: “Most legacy benefits will stop in July 2026.”
