The DWP has issued a new alert to people in the UK
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is warning millions to be vigilant of text messages as payments “start hitting bank accounts from today”. The government department issued a new alert on Wednesday, November 12.
The DWP has begun distributing money to approximately nine million pensioners, with the majority of those of State Pension age entitled to this year’s Winter Fuel Payment. This payment, worth up to £300, is being sent out to most pensioners across England and Wales from today.
In a recent alert on X, previously known as Twitter, the DWP announced: “Nine million pensioners are to benefit from vital support for energy costs during the colder months as Winter Fuel Payments start hitting bank accounts from today”. It further stated that payments will be automatically made between now and the end of December.
The DWP added: “DWP warns of a surge in Winter Fuel Payment scams. If you receive a text message inviting you to apply for a payment, do not engage with it and do not click on links. Instead, forward it to 7726.”
Responding to fraudulent text messages could enable scammers to access, and consequently withdraw money from, your bank account. If you or your partner have reached State Pension age, you may be eligible for £200 towards your household bills.
If you or your partner are over 80, you could qualify for £300. For those who meet the criteria, the Winter Fuel Payment for 2025 will be directly transferred into your account between now and the end of December 2025.
If your taxable income surpasses £35,000, your Winter Fuel Payment will be reclaimed through the tax system.
