The DVLA has issued a reminder to motorists
Millions of drivers are being encouraged to verify a key expiry date in a fresh warning from the DVLA, which suggests motorists could sidestep a last-minute rush by registering for its online account service.
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency has issued an appeal for drivers to add their vehicles to a digital driver and vehicles account, enabling them to quickly access essential information including their MOT certificate expiry date. The reminder arrives as numerous drivers still depend on paper reminders or simply overlook their MOT renewal date entirely – risking a frantic last-minute test booking, potential fines and invalidating their vehicle’s roadworthiness status.
A vehicle typically requires a valid MOT certificate once it reaches three years old. Operating a vehicle without a valid MOT can result in a fine and may cause complications with insurance claims if a vehicle is deemed unroadworthy.
In a statement shared on social media, the DVLA said: ‘Don’t forget to add your vehicles to your Driver and vehicles account. You can then view your vehicle details, including when your MOT expires.’
The digital account enables drivers to access various services, including checking driving records, viewing penalty points, managing vehicle tax reminders and renewing a driving licence. Yet one of the most valuable features for drivers is the capability to see when an MOT is due, helping motorists avoid missing a vital deadline.
The Government also offers a separate online MOT checking service that enables motorists to verify whether a vehicle holds a valid MOT certificate and check its expiry date using just the registration number. Drivers can also access a vehicle’s complete MOT history, including past pass and fail outcomes, mileage records from tests and information about any faults spotted by examiners.
For those purchasing second-hand cars, the MOT history tool offers crucial insight into a vehicle’s overall condition and whether persistent problems have developed over the years. The DVLA confirmed that motorists can opt for digital reminders rather than paper notifications when updating their vehicle information online.
Experts consistently warn drivers against leaving MOT bookings to the eleventh hour, especially during peak times when testing centres may have restricted availability. Motorists whose vehicles are nearing the third anniversary of registration should be particularly alert, as this marks when a car needs its inaugural MOT test.
