The pastel pink appliance looks similar to the iconic retro brand Smeg, but for a fraction of the price
Brands including Smeg have become well known for its ‘luxury’ take on the staple household kettles, fans of the retro pastel look usually pay a higher price for the design privilege. There’s another retailer selling a similar looking kitsch appliance for a fraction of the price.
Some shoppers say they’re even ‘replacing their old Smeg’ appliances for it. The Retro 1.7L Pink Jug Kettle is being snapped up from Dunelm thanks to its uncanny resemblance to the Smeg brand – it and costs £45, not Smeg’s £200+ price for a similar design.
Smeg is known for its pastel-coloured appliances, included in this kettle and toaster set at Very for £289, and often branded as a ‘beautiful update’ to worktops, shoppers seem to have found a cheaper alternative with the Pink Jug Kettle. Users say it’s ‘great value for money and a good replacement for Smeg’ for those who don’t want to spend hundreds on an appliance to make hot cups of tea.

Ninja’s electric BBQ is ‘so easy and clean’ it has Brits ditching coal and gas ones
It has a unique retro style and a seemingly generous 1.7-litre capacity, which is said to make as much as seven cups at a time. While its colour can be batted against Smeg, it has a distinctive temperature dial design, which isn’t seen on the designer brand. “The Retro Pink Kettle is easy to fill and boils faster than my previous kettle”, said one shopper.
Another shopper commented on the speed of the kettle to reach boiling, as they said: “Fantastic kettle Looks fantastic. Boils super fast.”
The brand doesn’t have an official ‘rapid boil function’ despite users saying it reaches temperature quickly. If this is something you’re looking for, then Ninja’s Rapid Boil Kettle, at £99, can boil one cup in less than 50 seconds.
Another model on offer is the Tefal Sense, which is discounted at Argos for £35. This beats Dunelm’s slightly more expensive retro model and has more features to choose from.
The Ninja model also has a hold temperature feature, something that the £45 Dunelm Retro Pink appliance does not have. This is a higher quality spec which holds the boil temperature for up to 30 minutes and cuts the amount of times users would need to re-boil and use up energy.
“Looks fabulous in my kitchen with the toaster and I love the colour as well- my favourite colour”, said one shopper. Dunelm also sells the matching Retro toaster, for £45, meaning shoppers can get a full pastel pink set for £90, instead of Smeg’s near £300 price mark.
“Great value for money replacement for a Smeg, well impressed with it”, said another shopper. While another said: “Beautiful! It works very well and we love it. Excellent quality.
“We like the temperature gauge which is helpful if you want another cup and you’re not sure whether the water is still hot. It is heavier than previous kettles when empty, so you need to check the gauge to see how much water is in the kettle if you normally go by the weight to determine whether the kettle needs a refill.”
