A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said “enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances of the incident” after the child was found walking along the road in Dalton
Police have arrested two people and launched an investigation after a toddler was found wandering alone on a busy road.
West Yorkshire Police said the child – believed to be a girl aged between three and five years old – was found walking along a road in the Wakefield Road area of Dalton, in Huddersfield.
She had not been reported missing when she was found by a member of the public who had informed police, having seen her alone at a junction.
Police launched an urgent house-to-house operation in search of her family soon after the shocking discovery at around 6.51pm on Sunday.
They issued a statement on social media at midnight saying the child had been identified and added they had made two arrests following the call out.
The statement read: “A report was received at 6:51pm this evening of a young child in the street in the Dalton area. The child was taken to a place of safety and house to house enquiries made in the local area.
“The child has now been identified, and enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances of the incident. Two people have been arrested as part of this investigation and are currently in police custody.”
One social media user commenting under the post said they had received a knock from police the night the young girl went missing, adding she “hadn’t stopped thinking about her”.
She said: “Thank goodness! I was so worried when we got a knock on the door asking if we knew the child, I havent stopped thinking about her and what had happened!
“Thank heavens shes now safe, thank you neighbours who took her in and found her and kept her safe, and thank you WY police for finding out who she was. I hope the poor little girl gets the help and support she needs.
“Doesn’t bear thinking about, what could of happened to her!”
