Fraser Derbyshire, 35, was rushed to hospital after he was discovered unresponsive at Cross Hotel and Resorts in Bangkok on Thursday July 9. Doctors have since said he is suffering from sepsis
A British dad is fighting for his life in a coma at a Thai hospital after collapsing suddenly in his hotel room during a dream holiday.
Fraser Derbyshire, 35, was rushed to hospital after he was discovered unresponsive at Cross Hotel and Resorts in Bangkok on Thursday July 9. Doctors have since said he is suffering from sepsis and an infection on one of his heart valves.
His family were told had an undiagnosed infection in his heart which spread to his brain, although the cause of the infection remains unknown. They say it could have started from something as simple as a cut or an insect bite.
Fraser had travelled to Thailand with a friend from home just hours before his mysterious collapse. His family said he was otherwise fit and healthy. Fraser, of Sheffield, South Yorks., now urgently needs open-heart surgery before he can be brought home to his four-year-old daughter, Poppy.
Fraser’s cousin Leanne Derbyshire said: “While on holiday in Thailand, Fraser was found unconscious in his hotel room and was rushed to Sikarin Hospital in Bangkok. He is currently in a coma and on a ventilator after developing sepsis affecting his brain due to an undiagnosed medical condition.
“Unfortunately, for reasons that are currently unclear, Fraser does not have medical insurance. His family are now facing overwhelming medical costs while trying to do everything they can to support him and bring him home.”
She added: “We have received heartbreaking news. Fraser now urgently needs open-heart surgery after doctors discovered that sepsis has caused a severe infection in one of his heart valves. The surgery alone will cost £11,000 and this is in addition to the significant medical expenses already incurred during his treatment in Thailand.”
Leanne launched an online fundraiser within hours of the incident, with more than £6,000 donated in just under a week. However, the family fear the final bill could be far higher as Fraser’s treatment continues.
Leanne said: “He knows a lot of people and there’s a lot of people out there who are obviously rooting for him and really want to get him home to his daughter.
“To be honest, when you’re going through something like this, I feel like it’s quite comforting to know that there are people out there that really want to help and also care about Fraser. That really is what he needs at the moment, to know that there are people that care about him.”
Fraser has been described as a “devoted young father” whose loved ones are determined to get him back to his daughter His heartbroken parents, who flew 12 hours from the UK to be with him, remain at his bedside in Thailand as they wait anxiously for news.
Leanne added: “They said that he obviously looks really unwell. When they arrived and actually spoke to him he moved his eyes slightly, so we’re all obviously taking that as a positive because he was unresponsive.”
