Adam was a “deeply loved son, brother, dad, partner and friend by everyone he came across”

A breakdown mechanic died when he was crushed under his own truck while helping a stranded driver. Dad Adam Mewton, 23, was killed after becoming trapped under his lorry as he was attempting to recover another motorist. Police confirmed Adam was pronounced dead at the scene shortly on North Walk Hill, in Lynton, Devon on November 22.

Adam – described as a “deeply loved son, brother, dad, partner and friend by everyone he came across” – worked for Field Services Recovery, in Ivybridge, Devon. His devastated family are now fundraising for his funeral.

Sister-in-law, Jasmine, 30, is raising funds to help his family – including parents Nicola and Alan, and his partner, Tegan, and his five-year-old son, Tyler – organise a send-off that reflects Adam’s passion for vehicles and his pride in his work. Jasmine, a driving instructor based in Exmouth, Cornwall, said: “Adam was the hardest working young lad out there. Adam never turned down a call on the job – day or night.

“Unfortunately Adam was crushed by the mechanics of his own recovery vehicle. The reasons to why the vehicle moved while recovering another vehicle is still unclear. He worked so hard. It was his passion – recovery was something he had always wanted to get into.

“He loved his job at Field Services Recovery – recovering many people out on Devon’s roads including large HGVs and south west ambulances. He adored his boss, who he looked up to in so many ways, and he was such a strong part of the company. He sadly died on the job in a tragic accident.”

Jasmine, who taught Adam to drive a HGV a year ago, said she was glad she had that time with Adam to help him along his journey to fulfil his passion. She explained: “He was pleasure to help. Adam never had a bad word to say about anyone – and that showed by the national comments of thoughts of him and his family are getting.”

The fundraiser aims to give Adam, who was from the Plymouth area, ‘the best send off’ and to support his family through this time following his tragically-early death. Jasmine said: “We are fundraising to help support his family in the difficult time with organising the funeral as well as trying to finish one of his projects – his Land Rover – we want to get it back on the road as Adam was in the process of doing it to enjoy the time with his son before he passed.

“As a family we will continue recovering the land rover with Tyler – so he still gets to enjoy daddy’s Land Rover but with his uncles instead. Adam is going to have such an amazing send off and I know he will love the support everyone is giving. He will always be our boy in blue – as blue was his colour.”

Jasmine added: “We would like to thank friends and family for all the support in this difficult time and everyone who has already donated to the GoFundMe. We want to thank all of the recovery companies across the nation who have send their condolences and to all of Adam’s work family who have been so amazing during this time.

“We’d also like to thank the community of Lynton and Lynmouth for their support and kindness after this tragic accident happened in their village.”

In a tribute post on facebook, Field Services Recovery wrote: “Adam was not only a valued member of our team – he was truly family. His presence filled every space he entered, and his impact on all of us will remain for a lifetime.

“Adam was the kind of person who would do anything for anyone, no matter how big or small the request. His work ethic and dedication was unmatched, and his kindness was felt by everyone fortunate enough to know him. He brought laughter, support, and strength to those around him, and his absence leaves a void that words struggle to describe.

“We are deeply shaken by this loss, and our hearts go out to Adam’s loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time. Adam will forever be missed, remembered, and cherished.”
