Drone footage captures fire at Blairlinn Industrial Estate in Cumbernauld
A massive fire has erupted at an industrial estate with six people taken to hospital and residents told to “stay indoors” as thick black smoke fills the sky.
Firefighters are battling the huge blaze at Blairlinn Industrial Estate in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire. Two fire service appliances first rushed to the scene at around 2.35pm and on arrival firefighters found one single storey building well alight. A further four appliances then raced to the industrial estate as well to help tackle the fire.
Six ambulances, three special operations response teams (SORT), a paramedic response unit, a trauma team and a resuscitation rapid response unit (3RU) were all dispatched to the scene. The alarm was raised after a huge plume of black smoke was seen billowing miles away.
Six people have been taken from the scene of the blaze to hospital, the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed. Five patients were rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary while one patient was taken to University Hospital Monklands. There is no update on their condition at this point.
In their most recent statement a spokesperson said: “We received a call at 14:55 to attend an incident at Blairlinn Industrial Estate, Cumbernauld. Six ambulances, three special operations response teams (SORT), a paramedic response unit, a trauma team and a resuscitation rapid response unit (3RU) were dispatched to the scene. Five patients were transported to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and one patient was transported to University Hospital Monklands.”
Police have evacuated nearby buildings and officers have asked residents to stay indoors as well keeping windows closed due to black smoke continuing to pour out of the industrial estate.
A statement from the police read: ‘We are asking the public in the Greenfaulds area of Cumbernauld to stay indoors and keep windows closed as emergency services are dealing with a large fire in Mid Road, Cumbernauld. This is a precautionary measure. We will continue to update you.’
Councillor Adam Smith of Cumbernauld East made a statement telling constituents: “A serious fire is well underway at present at Blairlinn Industrial Estate. Please keep clear of the area while emergency services work to extinguish the fire. I hope everyone is safe and that there have been no injuries from this incident.”
Scottish Water has alerted customers who live nearby the industrial estate there could be low pressure and discolouration in their water due to the fire service operating in the area. A statement reads: “Scottish Fire and Rescue are currently operating in Mid Road, Cumbernauld which may be causing an interruption to water supply affecting customers in the surrounding areas.
“We will provide a further update as soon as we can to confirm when supplies should be returning to normal. If you experience brown water, we advise to allow your cold-water kitchen tap to run at a reduced pressure until this runs clear.
“Do not run any other taps or use any water appliances whilst doing so and follow the same process with any other taps affected once the water is clear from your cold-water kitchen tap. We apologise again for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience during this time.”
