Cold Weather Payments are made to people in England and Wales who receive a range of benefits and are worth £25 when the temperature falls
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has today triggered Cold Weather Payments in nearly 250 postcode areas in England and Wales.
It comes as the Met Office issues a flurry of winter weather warnings for this week. Over half a million households will be eligible for the payments, which will see them receive £25 towards the cost of heating their homes.
The new payments have been triggered today in a total of 246 postcode areas, including Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire and parts of Wales and Northern Ireland.

Cold Weather Payments are made to people in England and Wales who receive a range of benefits. A separate scheme is operated in Northern Ireland along similar lines but in Scotland the support for heating bills is paid every winter and not linked to specific spells of cold weather.
So far this winter there have been £25 payments triggered for 697 postcode areas, which includes 18 districts which have received two payments as the current cold snap has lasted two weeks in those areas.
The latest payments today will be sent to an estimated 532,000 households, including around 336,000 in Greater Manchester. It means the total cost to the taxpayer of the Cold Weather Payments triggered today alone will be £13.3m.
For England and Wales, a payment is triggered whenever an area is forecast to record average temperatures below zero on seven consecutive days. Forecasters are predicting a spell of cold weather heading into the New Year with subzero temperatures expected in many areas.
There are an estimated 3.9 million people eligible for Cold Weather Payments under the pensions > DWP scheme and of these 1.2 million are in receipt of Pensions Credit.
The DWP says those claiming the following benefits may be eligible for the Cold Weather Payment; Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, Support for Mortgage Interest.
Not all those receiving these benefits will automatically receive a Cold Weather Payment. There are a number of factors which will determine whether a payment will be made and full details of those eligible on GOV.UK.
Payments of £25 are made directly into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days, appearing with a payment reference including the customer’s National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. You do not need to apply for this payment.
