It’s one of the UK’s biggest cinema chains
One of the UK’s biggest cinema chains, with 94 venues around the country, has closed a flagship cinema for the final time. Vue has been operating in Cardiff city centre for over 20 years after first opening in 2005 in the heart of the capital next door to the iconic Principality Stadium and a stone’s throw from the city’s central train station.
It announced earlier in June that it was closing and said it was consulting with staff members over the prospect of redundancy. It didn’t announce a date at the time but said: “We can confirm that our site at Stadium Plaza will be closing later this month. We are consulting with our Cardiff colleagues, who are our priority, and until this point, we will continue to provide cinemagoers in Cardiff the very best big screen experience.”
However, it closed for the last time on June 25 and removed its film listings from its website, where a message read: “The credits may be rolling in Cardiff but Vue is still open in Cwmbran, Merthyr and Swansea.”
It’s closed at a time when the biggest summer blockbusters include Toy Story 5, Disclosure Day, Scary Movie, Masters of the Universe, Obsession and Star Wars : The Mandalorian and Grogu.
With 94 branches, Vue is the UK’s third-largest cinema chain, behind Odeon and Cineworld. Its cinemas include a total of 916 screens. Its Cardiff location right on the River Taff was known for its views across the city and had seven screens.
