The first wave of payouts for Brits who were affected by the car finance scandal is expected in June and many UK car owners still don’t realise they could be owed compensation

Brits who think they may have been impacted by the car finance scandal should check their agreements* sooner rather than later.

If you paid monthly for your car in the UK between April 2007 and November 2024, you likely had a PCP or Hire Purchase (HP) agreement. However, around 12.1 million car finance agreements are believed to have been affected by hidden commission mis-selling, with many drivers still unaware they may have paid more than they should.

A Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) redress scheme launched in March is expected to pay out an average of £829 per agreement. However, with the free scheme now facing four legal challenges in court, there is uncertainty over its future and when the first payouts will be implemented.

Brits who check their agreements and raise a complaint before June 30, 2026, are expected to be among the first wave of payouts. However, trying to dig out your lender paperwork can be a daunting task.

Your finance provider may have included hidden commissions within your PCP or HP deal, and you could potentially be owed compensation from them. You can find your agreements and check your potential claim status using MakeAPCPClaim’s simple online checking tool.

Make a PCP Claim is owned and operated by Fountain Finance Limited, which is registered in England and Wales. Fountain Finances is a claims management company. You can complain for free directly to your lender, the Financial Ombudsman Service, or through the FCA’s free motor finance redress scheme. We receive a referral fee from our partner law firm if you choose to proceed.

*£1,846.23 is the average redress obtained by HD Law as of July 2025.

*Our Free Check confirms whether motor finance agreements have been identified from your credit search and the number found. Further details of any agreements will be provided once HD Law is instructed.

Through MakeAPCPClaim, legal firm HD Law can help you automatically find historical agreements, even if you’ve changed addresses or forgotten your lender. It’s a 60-second process* and HD Law does all the heavy lifting, so no need to dig out your lender paperwork.

Over 490,000 drivers have already used the free tool* to find their agreements, dating back to 2007.

Simply enter your postcode and some basic details to get started, and MakeAPCPClaim locates all of your agreements in seconds, and pulls through how much you could potentially be owed.

What payout could I be entitled to?

If you’ve had a finance agreement, you may be eligible for compensation due to mis-selling. It takes as little as 60 seconds* to check your eligibility by filling out MakeAPCPClaim’s online form*.

MakeAPCPClaim, which has an average rating of 4.7 on TrustPilot, has been working with partner law firm HD Law to secure high payouts for UK drivers.

As of 31 July 2025, the average claim value per agreement is £1,846.23*, while the average payout under the FCA redress scheme is £829.

If you make a claim through MakeAPCPClaim, you’re in good hands. HD Law, led by Kevin Durkin, is the only firm to have successfully led a PCP case to the Supreme Court.
