The Met Office has extended a yellow weather warning following fierce thunderstorms and heavy rain overnight – as Brits joked the noise was ‘like a bomb going off’
Fierce thunderstorms and heavy rain rocked the capital and surrounding areas overnight, keeping several Brits up at night with rattling windows.
Those living in and around the south joked that the storm needed to ‘give it a rest’ as loud thunder jolted them awake, with many saying it ‘sounded like bomb went off’. Another wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Never mind laying eggs, my poor chickens and ducks will be s****ing bricks.
It comes as the Met Office extended one of two yellow weather warnings across large parts of the UK following the storm. The first yellow weather warning covered an area from Portsmouth to Plymouth, and northwards to South Wales. It was announced at 8pm on Wednesday, as the Met Office warned of difficult driving conditions and possible flooding. The warning remains in place until 8am this morning.
The second warning came into force at 11pm last night, covering the majority of southeast England, stretching as far north as Oxford and including London. The warning was originally in place until 6am this morning, but has now been extended until 10am following fierce thunderstorms and rain overnight.
One person posted a video from their bedroom window onto X, which showed purple lightning covering the sky across London.
The Met Office added that Thursday could also be the warmest day of the year so far after warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms overnight across southern parts of England and Wales.
