Police are investigating the mystery death of a British cyclist in Lanzarote – the 55-year-old was discovered on a road between the village of Guatiza and the island’s east coast
Police have launched an investigation after a British cyclist was found dead by the side of a road in Lanzarote.
The 55-year-old, who has not been named, was found lying by his bike on a road between the village of Guatiza and the east coast of the island after a passing walker raised the alarm just after midday. Emergency responders raced to the scene but he could not be saved, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
His partner is said to have been informed of his death at their hotel, where she was waiting for him to finish his ride. The causes of his death are now being investigated by the Spanish Civil Guard. The Mirror has contacted the Foreign Office for comment.
Police sources said there were no superficial signs of any injuries on the man, and that they were waiting for the autopsy results to see if he had died of natural causes. They said it is possible he suffered a health problem while he was cycling and was unable to reach a more populated area to ask for help in time has not been ruled out.
It was not immediately clear this evening if he had been carrying his mobile phone with him. A spokesman for the local emergency services co-ordination centre said the alarm had been raised around 12.45pm on Monday, and said two ambulances were sent to the scene.
Local police employed by Teguise Town Hall were also sent to the scene before the Civil Guard took over. They remained at the scene prior to the arrival of court workers so the body could be removed for post-mortem.
Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, is a popular destination for cyclists, and many local companies offer both rental bikes and excursions. The area where the British cyclist was found dead is around 20 minutes drive north of the Lanzarote capital Arrecife.
