Simon Batchelor and Lisa Fryett, from Essex, suffered devastating injuries after getting trapped in wildfires in Spain and remain in a critical condition in hospital
A British couple have been left fighting for their lives after getting trapped in Spain’s deadly wildfires and suffering “devastating injuries”.
Simon Batchelor and Lisa Fryett, from Canvey, Essex, were staying near the country’s hardest hit villages – Bédar and Los Gallardos – when the blaze broke out.
The pair were left seriously injured and were eventually rescued from a mountainside the day after the fire erupted.
Simon and Lisa reportedly begged rescuers to save them so they could see their children again. The pair remain in a critical condition in hospital, and their three children have since travelled to Spain to be by their parents’ bedside.
A fundraiser has been launched to help the family pay for any emergency travel or accommodation costs, and other expenses.
The appeal, which has raised more than £46,000, reads: “Our family is asking for your help during the most heartbreaking time of our lives. Simon and Lisa were staying near Bédar, Los Gallardos, Spain, when tragedy struck.
“A devastating wildfire swept through the area, leaving them fighting for their lives. They were rescued from the mountainside the following day and are now both in critical condition in a hospital in Spain.
“When they were found, despite their devastating injuries, Simon and Lisa pleaded with their rescuers to save them because they wanted to see their children again.”
The fundraiser continues: “Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the emergency services, that wish has now become a reality, with all three of their children by their side in Spain. Lisa’s twin sister has also remained by her side, just as she always has throughout their lives.”
“As Simon and Lisa continue to receive lifesaving treatment, the costs of emergency travel, accommodation, food, transport and other unexpected expenses are mounting every day.
“We are raising funds to help ease the financial burden on our family so they can focus on what truly matters – being there for Simon and Lisa during this unimaginably difficult time.
“Every donation, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser with your family and friends. Your kindness, support and prayers mean more to us than words can express.
“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your compassion, generosity and support. Whether you donate, share this fundraiser or keep Simon and Lisa in your thoughts and prayers, every act of kindness means more to our family than words can express.”
The family thanked the people of Spain and locals for the “incredible kindness and support they have shown during this devastating time”.
The page added: “We also want to thank all of the emergency services involved, especially the Guardia Civil officers, whose courage and determination against all odds helped fulfil Simon and Lisa’s wish to be reunited with their children.”
