A man whose death has sparked a murder investigation has been named as a former member of the armed forces and a “caring soul who served his country”.
Police were called to a flat in Leicestershire at around 11.45am on Tuesday, December 23, after a man was found unresponsive.
The 49-year-old, who was later pronounced dead at the scene in George Toon Court in Brook Street, has now been named as Simon Geary.
Detectives say they believe that Mr Geary had been assaulted inside the flat.
Another man, also aged 49, was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody, the force confirmed today, Leicestershire Live reports.
In a statement Mr Geary’s heartbroken family said: “Simon was a much-loved son and brother. The support he has given our family will never be forgotten. He was a kind caring soul who served his country in the Army and we are so proud of what he achieved in his career.
“We would ask the public to please respect our privacy at this very difficult time.”
Detective Inspector Kevin Hames, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU), said police officers would be carrying out further enquiries in Syston over the coming days.
The EMSOU is a specialist unit which deals with the region’s most serious crimes.
“Officers will remain in the area over the coming days to carry out further enquiries and establish what happened,” said DI Hames, who is leading the murder investigation.
“This includes examining CCTV and speaking to residents in the area.
“Though I know people will be spending time with loved ones over the coming days, if you have any information that could help us, please do come forward.
“Anything you’re able to tell us – no matter how insignificant you think it may be – could assist our investigation.”
