The youngster, aged just four, is believed to have got into difficulty into the hotel swimming pool at the popular British holiday hotspot and is now in critical condition

A young boy is reportedly fighting for his life after suffering a horrific drowning at a hotel pool on a Spanish island.

The four-year-old was pulled from the swimming pool in southern Gran Canaria on Saturday afternoon. Despite his rescue, the child remains in critical condition.

The Sun reports the boy suffered a severe drowning incident. Emergency crews rushed to the scene and quickly transported him to a private medical centre in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

However, it is reported his condition worsened and doctors made the decision to call in specialist rescue teams to relocate the boy.

Medics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) took the child by helicopter in the dramatic rescue. The aircraft landed in a car park of a nearby school where it was met by the ambulance to race the ill child to Las Palmas.

During his airlift to hospital, he was under constant supervision from the specialist team, including a doctor and a nurse.

Staff at the University Maternal and Child Hospital in Las Palmas met the boy from the helicopter alongside other emergency units, including paediatric specialists.

Officials confirmed the boy had exhibited signs of severe drowning before the emergency transfer. He remains in a serious condition.
