A person has died while climbing in the Lake District on Boxing Day, with the climber travelling through dense fog before suffering a suspected fatal head injury
A family has been left with a Boxing Day horror story after a holidaymaker died while climbing in the Lake District.
The tragic death of the unnamed climber, who had a suspected fall which left them with a fatal head injury, was confirmed with the incident believed to have taken place 1,700ft up a densely foggy mountain.
Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) were called around 3pm on December 26th to help a man who found unconscious at Grisedale Hause, near Grisedale Tarn – over 530-metres up in the Lake District. Members of the Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team attempted to resuscitate the man, but he was declared dead at the scene.
Langdale and Ambleside MRT added: “CPR was unsuccessful and he was sadly declared deceased. He was recovered to Keswick MRT base by a Coastguard helicopter.” The incident has been classified as “fellwalking” and saw a team of 13 work for four and a half hours.
Coniston Mountain Rescue team, who also assisted, explained that the suspected fall happened on Boxing Day which was a “damp and foggy afternoon”. They said: “We were called by Cumbria Police about a male found unresponsive with a head injury.
“The job was passed to Langdale Ambleside MRT (but) they subsequently asked for assistance for a long stretcher-carry, and we despatched a Land Rover and five team members who made their way up the hill. HM Coastguard helicopter Rescue 199 was available and able to lift the casualty off the fell.”
The unnamed mountaineer’s death comes after an incident in Ireland where a couple was killed in a hit and run incident. The Mirror previously reported the deaths of Anthony Hogg, 40, and wife Georgina Hogg-Moore, 39, who were tragically killed on December 26.
The couple leaves behind two children. A vigil paying tribute to the pair was held on Friday (December 27). A man has since been arrested after he presented himself at the local police station the evening of Anthony and Georgina’s death.
A statement on their deaths reads: “Investigating Gardaí arrested a man (aged in his 40s) in connection with this incident yesterday evening, Thursday 26th December 2024. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in Dublin.
“A technical examination of the scene has been completed by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and the road has now reopened. Gardaí continue to appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.”
