A body was recovered by a team of specialist divers and a helicopter crew after a 17-year-old boy was reported missing at Pickmere Lake near Northwich on Tuesday

The body has been found in the search for a teenager who went missing while swimming in a patch of open water in Cheshire has been recovered by police.

A team of specialist divers and a helicopter crew helped recover the body. The unnamed 17-year-old, who was last seen swimming in the water at Pickmere Lake in Northwich on Tuesday.

Formal identification is yet to take place, but officers believe the body to be that of the missing teen.

Chief Inspector Jamie Lewis said: “This was a young boy who had his entire life ahead of him. At what is an incredibly difficult time, our thoughts remain with the boy’s family, friends and everyone who knew him.”

He added: “Over the bank holiday weekend, we have sadly seen the very real dangers of swimming in open water.

“We understand that with the warm weather many people could be tempted to take a dip in open water to cool off, but residents must be aware of the potential deadly consequences.”

The death is not being treated as suspicious, the force added.

The incident is the sixth this week involving teenagers drowning in bodies of water after going swimming during an unprecedented heatwave.
