Michael Henry, 19, went missing after the kayak he was in capsized near Boulmer on Tuesday, July 7, and his body was later found off the coast of Blyth
A body has been found after a month-long search for a 19-year-old lost at sea.
Kayaker Michael Henry is thought to have died after the two-man canoe he was travelling in capsized off the coast of Northumberland.
The second man on board the kayak managed to swim away when disaster struck on July 7. He managed to swim to a buoy which he was able to cling to before being rescued by the Coastguard.
Despite the best efforts of search and rescue teams, which quickly dispatched lifeboats to try and locate the lost teenager, the search was called off on July 15. He was presumed to have died at sea.
Now Northumbria Police have confirmed that a body has been recovered after it was found in the water off the coast of Blyth on July 26.
Formal identification has since taken place and a report has been prepared for the coroner. Michael’s family had previously paid a heartfelt tribute to him, describing him as a “marvellous person”, reports Chronicle Live.
On 15 July, they said: “We would like to thank everyone for all their love, kindness and support now and throughout Michael’s life; it was that love and kindness that made him the marvellous person he was.
“Michael was a much-loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, team-mate and friend; a keen sportsman who loved the outdoors. Michael was preparing to go travelling this summer and hoping to start university next academic year.
“Michael will be forever in our thoughts, and we will miss him. Our thanks go to the emergency services and everyone who is helping to search for Michael.”
