The body of the second person who went missing during a Christmas Day swim at Budleigh Salterton is believed to have been found – this is a breaking story

The body of the second swimmer who went missing in Budleigh Salterton on Christmas Day is believed to have been found.

The man’s body was recovered from the sea off Exmouth in Devon after a large emergency services operation this afternoon (January 25). It is thought to be that of 63-year-old Matthew Upham, one of two swimmers who went missing in rough waters at Budleigh Salterton on Christmas morning. Police and the coastguard were seen near Orcombe Point at Exmouth today, according to DevonLive. Witnesses reported seeing a cordon restricting access to Sandy Bay from Orcombe Point. One local resident reported seeing two marked and one unmarked police cars, as well as three marked coastguard vehicles.

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that the body of a man was recovered along the shoreline earlier today. A spokesperson for the force said: “Emergency services were called shortly before 3pm on Sunday 25 January to Exmouth Beach following a report of a possible body seen near the shore.

“The body of a man has since been recovered. Formal identification is yet to take place, but the family of a 64-year-old man from Budleigh Salterton have been informed of this development.”

Earlier this week, the body of the first swimmer is believed to have been discovered on the shore at Sandy Bay in Exmouth. Police and the coastguard were called to the area at 8.45am on Tuesday (January 20). While formal identification is yet to be carried out, officers believe the person to be the 47-year-old man who never made it back to the shore at Budleigh Salterton.

The identity of the 47-year-old man has not been publicly released. His next-of-kin has been informed.
