You can have a cool night’s sleep without the need for a fan
Hot weather can severely impact sleep, as many UK homes struggle when temperatures rise. Many of us spend the night tossing and turning as we try our best to stay cool.
There are many options to help reduce the temperature in bedrooms, including fans and windows. However, one cleaning expert has an unusual hack that she says will help cool things right down during hot weather.
Lynsey Crombie, who shares her home tips and tricks on social media and This Morning, does a 15-minute task before bed for a “lovely cool night’s sleep” without the need for a noisy fan.
The Queen of Clean explained that she simply places a white sheet in a large zip lock bag. Lynsey puts it in her freezer for 15-minutes so it fully cools down.
She said: “Struggling with the heat at night? Then I have got a really simple hack for you.
“This is a white cotton sheet that I have put into a zipped bag. It’s a double sheet, perfect for keeping cool. Then just take that to your freezer and pop it in.”
Lynsey says it needs to be in the freezer for 15-minutes before going to bed. She added: “When you get into bed later with your nice cotton sheet it will be lovely and cool.”
Her followers were keen to give her hack a go as one said: “Yes Lyndsey this is fab.” Another added: “Brilliant tip – the nights are so warm aren’t they.”
Someone else commented: “Ooh have to try this xx.” Another unusual way to keep cool during hot nights is to place a damp town or sheet by an open window.
John Lawless from Best Heating said: ” If you open a window and hang a damp towel or sheet in front of it that has been soaked in cold water, it can cool the room down.
“This is because the warm air will have to pass through the sheet and turn it into cold air before it enters the room.”
Throughout the day, sunlight will heat up any air near windows that then gets trapped in a room, and once you draw your curtains at night, all that warmth will become locked in.
The towel technique works because water needs energy to evaporate, and it draws that energy from any heat in the surrounding air.
Water from a damp towel draws heat from the air near a window before it enters your home, helping cool your bedroom and allowing you to enjoy a more restful night’s sleep.
