Armed police swooped on a residential street after three masked intruders were seen wielding ‘a machete’ in what is being treated as an aggravated burglary
Armed police descended on a residential street after three people were seen breaking into a home with a “machete”.
The suspects, dressed in dark clothing and wielding a “machete”, forced their way into a property on West View in Audenshaw, Tameside, shortly after 3pm on Friday, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said. The property was occupied at the time of the incident.
GMP said armed police arrived “within minutes” after being alerted to reports of an aggravated burglary by a member of the public. It was initially unclear whether the suspects were still inside, but after a “swift assessment” of the property, officers established the suspects had fled, Manchester Evening News reports.
About 40 minutes after the initial call, police located two 17-year-old boys matching the suspects’ description outside the Hooley Hill convenience store on Guide Lane. Both were arrested, with one bailed and the other remaining in custody on Saturday for further questioning.
The incident is being treated as an aggravated burglary and enquiries are ongoing. GMP said that although the motive of the attack remains unclear, there is no wider threat to the community at this time.
Detective Chief Inspector Abdul Kahar, from GMP’s Criminal Investigations Department and Intelligence Unit, said: “Incidents involving knives, burglary, or any kind of threatening behaviour are completely unacceptable and have no place in our community.
“We understand how concerning events like this can be, and I want to reassure residents that your local neighbourhood officers will be in the area over the coming days, providing a visible presence, offering support, and ensuring you feel safe.
“Our investigation is ongoing, and officers are working tirelessly to piece together exactly what happened. We are determined to identify everyone involved, and anyone responsible for bringing fear or harm to our streets will face the consequences of their actions. Keeping our communities safe is our absolute priority, and we will continue to work closely with residents to maintain that safety.”
