Next time you shop in Aldi, you should look for a ‘secret code’ on the pricing labels that could help you save money and stock up on your favourite items before they disappear
You could save a small fortune by spotting one particular code on Aldi shelves.
Supermarket costs have soared in recent years, leaving us all on the hunt for bargains during our weekly shop. Understanding when and where to secure the best deals can make your groceries far more affordable, and there are certain insider tips and tricks that can help you land even bigger savings.
One bargain hunter on social media has revealed there’s a “secret code” all shoppers should watch out for when visiting their local Aldi store, as recognising it could help you cut costs significantly. Jordon Cox, known as Britain’s Coupon King, encouraged shoppers to search for the letter “D” on price labels across Aldi shelves.
In a video on Instagram, Jordon explained that the “D” should appear in the top right-hand corner of the price tag. It’s most commonly spotted on Specialbuys and other time-limited products, and it signifies something crucial — the item is being discontinued and won’t be replenished.
This is vital information, as if an item is available at a reasonable price, you can use this knowledge to stock up. This could save you cash in the long term, as you won’t need to visit another store and pay more for the identical item once Aldi’s stock has sold out.
In his video, Jordon said: “If you see a ‘D’ in the top right corner of a pricing label, that item is being discontinued after it’s sold out. So you might want to stock up and save some money on it if it’s something you want.”
In the caption, the bargain hunter went on to clarify that while the secret code is most commonly spotted on limited-time items that were never destined to hang around anyway, it does occasionally appear on other products throughout the store – so it’s always worth keeping an eye out to ensure your go-to favourites aren’t about to vanish from shelves.
He added: “You’ll often find this on Specialbuys and limited-time items, but sometimes you’ll see this around other places in the shop too! If it’s something you want, and it’s a good deal – stock up before it’s sold out.”
Commenters on Jordon’s video were grateful for the heads-up. Numerous people admitted they wished they’d been clued in sooner, as the tip could have helped them stockpile items they had no clue would soon be gone for good.
One person said: “Ohhh, I wish I knew this before they discontinued the rocky road bites. They were one of their best cakes.”
Another added: “I wish I knew that yesterday!”
Others were quick to point out that spotting the “D” symbol doesn’t always mean cause for alarm. Depending on what the product is, the discontinuation may only be temporary.
One commenter highlighted that seasonal goods often carry the discontinuation label, but they typically return to shelves once their season comes back around again. One commenter also pointed out that the “D” symbol can sometimes appear on items that are simply being discontinued temporarily while undergoing changes, such as a packaging redesign, meaning they could be back on shelves far sooner than you might expect.
They explained: “It could also mean that they are changing the packaging. So they discontinue the product only to relaunch the same product in a different packaging and box with a new barcode.”
Either way, if the thought of waiting months – or even a full year – for your favourite products to return fills you with dread, keeping an eye out for the symbol could give you the heads-up you need to bulk buy and stock up your cupboards before they disappear for good.
