A cleaning enthusiast has tested five different air fryer cleaning methods, and there was one that stood out from the rest, using just three household items.
The air fryer is, without question, one of the cleverest kitchen gadgets to emerge in the last 20 years. It possesses the power to transform humble ingredients, like spuds and Brussels sprouts, into showstoppers at teatime, whilst its technique for warming up yesterday’s pizza and sarnies is nothing short of brilliant.
That said, there’s one minor drawback: getting them clean can prove rather tiresome, especially when they’re slathered in olive oil, tasty marinades, or the drippings from an especially juicy cut of meat.
Following trials of five separate air fryer cleaning approaches, cleaning fanatic Daniela Alvarez at the kitchn awarded just one trick the full five stars.
The champion cleaning technique, which relies on three cupboard staples, left her utterly “blown away”.
Daniela found that pairing washing-up liquid with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide is “the most powerful, speedy but efficient method” requiring merely three minutes.
With this approach, she spooned two tablespoons of baking soda, two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide, and added two squirts of washing-up liquid straight into the air fryer basket to form a paste. As an alternative, you can blend it in a bowl and apply it from there.
Sixty seconds on, Daniela carefully scrubbed the whole basket using a soft toothbrush for roughly two minutes.
She subsequently employed the smooth side of a sponge to assist with rinsing away the paste under running water. Discussing how the cleaning technique worked out, Daniela revealed: “I was seriously impressed with the results. All of the stuck-on food, grease, smells, and most of the dark grime were completely gone once I had fully rinsed the air fryer basket.”

She pointed out that the washing-up liquid spray combined with mildly abrasive bicarbonate of soda and the enhancing properties of hydrogen peroxide made this homemade mixture “the hands-down winning combo”.
The cleaning fan went on to say: “I also liked that it only took a few minutes, which means I can consistently and regularly use this method to keep my air fryer basket totally clean and ready to go. Plus, I already had everything I needed for it.”
For anyone unable to source hydrogen peroxide, they can substitute it with white vinegar, as this similarly works to “break down stuck-on food and grease”.
That said, it’s important to mention that the blend of washing-up liquid, bicarbonate of soda and vinegar isn’t quite as effective and will require more time to deliver the same results.
