I was surprised which supermarket has won the impressive title for its £7.99 bottle
The ‘World’s Best Prosecco’ has been named, and I was stunned to find out which UK supermarket bagged the title. One supermarket has been named as having the World’s Best Champagne, World’s Best Prosecco, and World’s Best Crémant at the World Drinks Awards.
It went head-to-head with luxury Champagne houses and renowned brands in a blind taste test and picked up all three awards. Lidl came out on top at the awards, picking up a hat-trick of impressive gongs.
I decided to try the drinks out for myself, and I was impressed. What surprised me most was the price points Lidl have managed to stick to for such renowned drinks.
In no shade to Lidl, I was also surprised the budget supermarket had come out on top against such renowned competition. Its World’s Best Prosecco is priced at £7.99.
Allini Valdobbiadene Conegliano Prosecco Superiore Extra Dry DOCG is priced at a reasonable £7.99. Experts recognised the drink as having delicate kiwi notes, soft fruitiness and “fluffy bubbles”.
I tried it out for myself and agreed with the judges. I thought the fruitiness added a touch of sweetness to the drink, which had light bubbles.
The bubbles were not too strong or overpowering and didn’t hit the back of my throat like some other prosecco’s can. It has everything you want from a bottle of prosecco and can be enjoyed casually or saved for celebrations.
The price point means it is an accessible bottle, so many people will be able to enjoy a world-renowned drink without paying a premium price tag.
Lidl’s prosecco wasn’t the only drink that caught the eye of the judges. Its Champagne Bissinger & Co. Premier Cru was awarded the World’s Best Champagne title.
It is priced at £24.99 and was praised for having “elegant peach and sherbet lemon notes”. I found it to be bubbly and light, with a wonderful texture when drinking.
It had a delicate taste, which wasn’t very sweet considering the fruity notes described. Meanwhile, Lidl’s Marquis de Plagne Crémant de Loire AOC Brut was awarded the World’s Best Crémant.
This was my favourite out of the trio and is priced at £8.99. It has fresh apricot aromas, crisp citrus character and vibrant lime notes.
I thought it had the most fizz and bubbles out of the three bottles and wasn’t too dry or sweet. It had a perfect balance for me.
After sampling all three bottles, I know where I am heading when I next want a champagne or prosecco to enjoy.
