These changes could help people to make the most of their homes
Aldi shoppers could give their homes a major upgrade and have a convenient way to charge their devices without having to search for a bulky plug every time their batteries run low. An upcoming special sale includes a set of items that could make rooms feel “smarter” than usual.
Describing the Double Socket with USB (£19.99) online, Aldi wrote: “Power more, charge smarter. This double plug socket with integrated USB ports lets you power devices and charge electronics simultaneously.”
Available in two finish options (polished or brushed), Aldi shoppers could make the most of the sockets in their home by upgrading to these with two traditional sockets as well as integrated USB slots for charging devices without having to unplug something else.
The supermarket adds that these sockets, which come in a pack of two, have 15W USB charging output with charge shared across two outlets. Once your device is fully charged, the USB slots enter a ‘standby mode’.
These added ports can also “auto detect” USB devices and will adjust the charging pattern to suit the protective overload function. These 13A sockets are going to be available in Aldi’s Middle Aisle from Thursday, August 6, as part of the DIY collection in all stores across the UK.
Shoppers wanting something similar would have to pay much more from poular brands like B&Q. The DIY store is selling a similar two-pack of steel-effect plug sockets with USB ports for £35.
Is this upgrade worth it?
USB sockets are a good idea for modern homes because they save space, reduce clutter, and free up standard three-pin plug slots. However, opinions on forums like Screwfix Community Forum are mixed regarding slow charging speeds and future technology changes.
On the positive side, you can plug charging cables straight into the wall without needing a chunky plastic plug block. These USB-specific slots leave the main plug holes free for larger items like lamps, vacuums, or kitchen gear.
They are ideal for bedrooms for overnight phone and tablet charging next to the bed, where slow charging speed does not matter as much. But some are put off by the fact that technology is changing so quickly that these sockets may become outdated as newer devices shift from USB-A to USB-C, meaning the added ports could become obsolete.

Shoppers can check upcoming theme drops in advance on the Aldi SpecialBuy website. Customers can also view a digital version of the weekly magazine that is often found near in-store checkouts here.
Customers can usually preview the themes and exact pricing for the current and next Thursday and Sunday drops, depending on when they access the site. Thursday releases are often larger than Sunday, with the next batch including dozens of individual bargains.
