Police and fire crews have swarmed the village of Gwaelod-y-Garth in Cardiff which became flooded after an explosion at a nearby quarry, locals said
Multiple homes in Cardiff have been damaged after water came gushing through a village, forcing residents to evacuate.
Police and fire crews swarmed the village of Gwaelod-y-Garth which became flooded after an explosion at the nearby Breedon Group quarry, locals said.
Residents said the explosion, which happened at around 2pm, was like an “earthquake” and the most powerful blast experienced in 20 years of living in the area.
One local said she fears the incident could cause higher land in the area to become unstable.
An industrial estate on Main Road, neighbouring the quarry, has been evacuated.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: “We are currently responding to surface water flooding at Heol Berry and Heol Y Nant, Gwaelod-y-Garth in the Taff’s Well area.
“Please avoid the area to allow the emergency services to deal with the incident.”
South Wales Police have asked members of the public to “avoid the area,” reports Wales Online.
A spokesman for the force said: “Officers are currently in attendance to the area of Gwaelod-y-Garth, Taff’s Well, following reports of flooding.
“A road closure is in place at the junction of Heol Goch and Main Road. Please avoid the area to allow the emergency services to deal with the incident”.
There are reports of severe traffic delays between Radyr and Taff’s Well as police have closed roads which are flooded.
A spokesperson for the quarry operator, Breedon, has said they are aware of the incident but are unable to comment any further at this time.
A spokesperson for Breedon said: “We are aware of an incident that took place at our Taffs Well Quarry this afternoon.
“Our teams are working closely with the relevant authorities while engaging with the local community as we respond to the situation.
“Our priority is supporting the response, and we are not in a position to provide any further comment at this time.”
