Doing a simple task now could save you a lot of time and hassle down the line.
It’s well known that countless households would really struggle without a washing machine. These appliances, found in the majority of UK properties, are vital for keeping our clothes, towels and bedding clean and fresh, while eliminating germs and unpleasant odours.
Because they’re so relied on, it’s crucial to keep them in optimal working order. However, experts at Hotpoint have issued a warning to washing machine owners who might be going on holiday shortly.
This follows a recent survey revealing that many travellers have come back from trips to discover an appliance disaster awaiting them.
Research has shown that two thirds of holidaymakers follow a standard routine of home preparations before departing, yet nearly one fifth have arrived back to discover something has malfunctioned during their absence.
Burst pipes, defrosted freezers and mouldy food in the fridge lead the list of holiday homecoming issues.
Salah Sun, head of product at Hotpoint, said: “Spending some time in the days leading up to your holiday to prep your appliances could help you save on your energy bills and prevent unwelcome surprises upon your return.”
He explains that washing machines need special care, though it’s very simple to do.
To stop mould and foul smells from forming in your washing machine while you’re away on holiday, several essential steps can be very beneficial.
To begin with, run an empty hot cycle using washing machine cleaner, which should eliminate any lingering bacteria and unpleasant odours.
Salah said: “By doing this you’ll return to a fresh smelling machine.”
This was echoed by appliance specialists at Candy, who also suggested removing the filter and scrubbing it with a toothbrush to ensure nothing is stuck inside.
Wipe down the seal with a white vinegar solution to keep mould at bay, and remember to leave the door slightly ajar, allowing air to circulate and preventing any nasty smells from developing.
You should also turn the washing machine off at the wall before heading away, along with other appliances including the dishwasher, tumble dryer, microwave, kettle, and coffee machine.
Salah explained: “Appliances that heat water are particularly costly to leave on standby because they need to be ready to heat water instantly on demand.
“The collective effect of multiple appliances in standby mode can add pounds to your energy bill if you’re on holiday for a fortnight.”
Switching these appliances off at the plug or unplugging them entirely will prevent them from consuming unnecessary energy.
Televisions, computer monitors, printers and various countertop devices also continue drawing power when left on standby, so disconnecting them completely will save you the most.
