Coffee — it’s the elixir of the Gods, and more often than not, it’s exactly what a person needs to kickstart their day.
While there are a dime a dozen coffee chains making their presence felt across the length and breadth of the UK, coffee lovers can agree that there’s something special about discovering a new independent coffee shop serving a delicious cup of joe.
Whether it’s expertly brewed coffee bursting with layered and complex flavours or a cosy atmosphere, finding a hidden gem coffee shop can feel like striking gold for coffee aficionados. And it seems Brits agree.
A recent survey by Capital on Tap has discovered that 41% of consumers favour independent cafés. But which are the top UK cities for independent coffee shop enthusiasts?
To establish this, Capital on Tap examined coffee shop data across the UK’s biggest cities, ranking them according to the number of independent cafés per 100,000 residents and the share of coffee shops that are independently owned.
The findings show the UK cities where independent coffee culture is flourishing, and where coffee enthusiasts are most likely to discover their next favourite local café.
Brighton
Taking first place, Brighton leads the pack as the best UK city for independent coffee shop lovers. With 57.7 per 100,000 people, almost three-quarters of all coffee shops in the city (73.9%) are independently owned, creating a concentrated network of small, owner-operated establishments that clearly outnumber national chains.
This dominance is also evident in consumer behaviour, with 44% of people in Brighton & Hove stating they prefer independent coffee shops compared with under 20% who favour chains.
Norwich
Norwich comes in a close second, with 35.8 independent coffee shops per 100,000 people and 73.3% of the city’s cafés unconnected with major chains.
Local favourites include The Yard Coffee, renowned for its superb coffee and delicious toasties, alongside Strangers Coffee Company, which has accumulated hundreds of five-star online reviews.
Swansea
Swansea rounds out the top three at 28.7 per 100,000 people, with 73.2% of coffee shops independently run. Much like Brighton and Norwich, the city’s coffee scene is heavily skewed towards independent operators, who makeup the overwhelming majority of outlets.
For those who prefer familiar chain names such as Starbucks and Costa, Milton Keynes stands out as the UK’s most chain-dominated coffee city, with chains accounting for more than half (52.5%) of all coffee shops — equivalent to 15.21 chain coffee shops per 100,000 residents.
Interestingly, even in cities where chains hold sway, many consumers still opt for independent coffee shops. In Cambridge, for instance — the UK’s third most chain-heavy coffee city — just 19% of residents favour major chains.
Hugh Acland, Chief Commercial Officer at Capital on Tap, shed light on what the findings mean for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), emphasising that grasping local market dynamics, offering strong perceived value, and fostering consistency and customer loyalty are crucial to competing and thriving in the independent coffee sector.
