A vet has revealed life-saving tips to keep pets cool as the UK swelters under extreme heat warnings with temperatures reaching up to 38°C.
Dr Alex Crow, an RCVS licensed veterinary surgeon, warns that flat-faced dogs like French Bulldogs, Bulldogs and Pugs are at higher risk as they “can’t regulate temperature as well” as other breeds.
His top tip involves freezing dog food with water added, explaining: “Adding water to dog food and freezing it is an effective way to keep pets cool. It’s a great enrichment for dogs who are bored inside.”
Dr Crow also advises pet owners to keep animals indoors during peak heat and use the ‘pavement test’ – if you can’t hold your hand on tarmac for seven seconds, it’s too hot for paws.
Warning signs of overheating include heavy panting, red or dark gums, and wobbliness, with the vet stressing: “Dogs can die in just five minutes if they’re left in a hot car.”
If pets do overheat, Dr Crow says to cool them down immediately by pouring cold water over them before rushing to a vet.
