Brits are set to bake by the end of the week as the UK Health Security Agency issues heat alerts and the Met Office predicts heatwave conditions for swathes of the country
The Met Office has issued a warning for heatwave conditions this weekend and beyond as temperatures soar with one forecaster predicting a scorching 37C by Monday.
Met Office experts said temperatures are expected to reach the high 20s Celsius widely with the potential for 32C to be reached in the south of England on Sunday and then “even higher temperatures”.
New weather charts from Netweather show southern and eastern England is due to be baked by a plume of intense heat surging across the region at the end of next week with the forecaster predicting 37C in Greater London on Monday.
Another hot spell is forecast later in the month as temperatures reach 30C again with a wider swathe of the UK experiencing hot temperatures which are due to peak on Tuesday on June 30.
Meanwhile the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued yellow heat-health alerts for parts of England. The warnings cover four regions between June 17 and June 22 as the Met Office predicted temperatures nearing 30C in the South East alongside warm and humid conditions.
The muggy weather could lead to uncomfortably warm nights for many people forecasters have warned.
Brits in the South East, London, the East of England and the East Midlands are under the UKHSA yellow alert. The agency warned that high temperatures in the coming days could see greater risk to life of vulnerable people and increased use of healthcare services by vulnerable people. There could also be a spike in water‑related incidents, including risks from cold‑water shock and drowning, the government body said.
During the previous record-breaking heatwave, from May 24 to 31, the UK saw a horrifying death toll of 19 children and adults killed in water related incidents during one week. The Met Office has warned that temperatures could top 30C this weekend with heatwave conditions forecast for parts of the UK. The forecaster said: “Temperatures are expected to climb steadily, with southern parts of England approaching 30°C by Friday, depending on cloud cover, and becoming very warm more widely through the weekend. Some areas in the south and southeast of England are likely to see heatwave criteria met by Saturday and more widely on Sunday, with the potential for temperatures to reach the low 30s in the warmest locations.
“Headline maximum temperatures for the period are: 32°C on Friday in East Anglia, 28°C on Saturday as the warmest air temporarily shifts away from the UK, 32°C in the south and southeast of England on Sunday and the potential for 33°C in the same areas on Monday as warm conditions build again from the south.”
