Researchers asked drivers to rank everything from food options and cleanliness to hygienic toilets, parking, atmosphere and EV charging points
They are the unsung heroes of Britain’s motorways – the places where weary drivers flock for a caffeine fix, a comfort break or even just five blissful minutes away from the chaos of the roads.
A survey of 2,000 drivers, commissioned by Isuzu UK, asked travellers to rate everything from food options and cleanliness to hygienic toilets, parking, atmosphere and EV charging points. Gloucester Services (20%), perched on the M5 and family-owned in partnership with community development charity, the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, cruised into first place.
Far from your average greasy spoon by the roadside, the service station serves up high-quality food freshly prepared in its kitchens and boasts a farm shop packed with produce from 130 local suppliers – all located within 30 miles of the station. Second place went to the M6’s Tebay Services (17%), owned by a Cumbrian farming family and famed for championing local farmers and makers through its popular farm shop and kitchen.

Beaconsfield Services (11%) on the M40 also made the cut and is widely regarded as one of the most attractive service stations in Europe thanks to its lakeside terrace and preserved woodlands. West Yorkshire’s Wetherby Services (11%) also pulled into the top rankings, boasting its own dog walking area, EV superhub, showers and even washing machines for road-weary travellers.
The list of Britain’s best service stations also includes Rugby Services (11%), located on the M6 in Warwickshire; Surrey’s Cobham Services (11%) on the M25; and Stafford North Services (8%). The survey also underlined just how important a decent motorway stop has become, with motorists visiting an average of 25 service stations a year — and more than a third (38%) admitting they actively plan journeys around where they can stop along the route.
The research, commissioned by Isuzu UK, found British motorists also highly rate Leeds Skelton Lake Services (7%) on the M1, Oxford Services (7%) on the M40; Hampshire’s Fleet Services (7%); South Mimms Services (7%) in Hertfordshire, and Membury Services (6%), which sits on the Berkshire/Wiltshire border along the M4.
Perhaps the biggest shock entry on the list was Heston Services (M4) (6%). Once the butt of motorway jokes and the bane of exhausted commuters, the west London stop appears to have staged a comeback, with drivers praising revamped facilities, cleaner loos and a broader range of food outlets.
EV drivers (23%) spend the longest at service stations (an average of 34 minutes) while waiting for their vehicles to charge, although 5% complained there are never enough charging points when and where you need them. By comparison, one in five (21%) said charging facilities are plentiful most of the time.
Almost half (49%) of the 2,000 Britons polled admitted they have turned around and walked straight back out of a service station that failed to meet expectations, proving some motorway stops are still firmly stuck in the slow lane. George Wallis, Head of Marketing Isuzu UK, said: “It’s clear there are some great quality service stations across Britain. At Isuzu UK we know drivers work hard everywhere from motorways to muddy fields.”
