Jim Davis, 73, was allegedly punched to the ground by the youths after they reportedly threw a tree branch at a cyclist from a road bridge – police have now issued an update on the investigation
A heartbroken family has paid tribute to the “kindest man” who died following an alleged violent assault by a group of teenagers.
Jim Davis, 73, was allegedly punched to the ground by the youths after they reportedly threw a tree branch at a cyclist from a road bridge. Police were called to the Millennium Bridge in Cheltenham, at 7.30pm on Wednesday April 8 following a report that two males had thrown a large branch at a cyclist, who was travelling on the road below.
Gloucestershire Police said it is not believed the cyclist was injured, but the men were approached by Mr Davis on Honeybourne Way as they left the bridge. It is reported an exchange took place between them before one of the males punched Mr Davis in the face causing him to fall to the ground.
The suspects then fled before officers arrived at the location. Emergency services attended and Mr Davis was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Mr Davis, from Cheltenham, died on Friday night (10/04) – two days after the alleged assault.
Family have paid tribute to a “kind, compassionate man, a friend to many and a consummate storyteller”. In a statement, they said: “We as a family are devastated by the loss of Jimmy. He was a friend to so many, but to me and my family he was a much-loved uncle, brother and brother-in-law.
“Jimmy was one of the kindest people anyone could have the pleasure of meeting. He was caring, compassionate, and always putting others first. He made sure no one around him ever felt alone, and his love of motorcycles brought him into contact with many people, forming friendships wherever he went.
“With a natural warmth and a gift for storytelling, he shared his life with great joy and, in doing so, touched a remarkable number of lives. Our lives will never be the same without him, and we know that many others will share in the sadness we feel.”
Police confirmed two teenage boys, aged 16 and 17, were arrested on suspicion of murder. No further action is being taken against the 16-year-old, while the 17-year-old remains on police bail while enquiries continue.
The victim’s death is now being investigated by the Major Crime Investigation Team. Investigating officers are still appealing for further information and witnesses to what took place to come forward and contact police.
