Tesco is making it easy for shoppers to eat a little more healthily

Fresh, healthy, quality food should be available to everyone – whoever you are, wherever you live, and whatever your budget.

But while fruit and veg ought to make up a third of what we eat, government figures show that fewer than one in five adults and under one in 10 children are getting their 5-a-day.

Eating well can be a challenge, and the cost of fresh ingredients – as well as locating the best deals in store – are among the biggest issues most of us face when trying to shop for healthier food options.

That’s why Tesco is committed to helping the nation get more of its 5-a-day. It is working hard to ensure healthy options are more affordable and easier to access during the weekly shop than ever before.

Getting your 5-a-day on a budget

The good news is that small, practical choices can make a real difference, explains Oonagh Turnbull, Tesco’s head of health and sustainable diets campaigns.

She says, “Making the most of our offers on fruit and veg can help you add more healthy options to your basket while keeping costs down.”

Making healthy choices easy

Wondering where to start? Check out Tesco’s weekly Fresh 5 deals.

“They’re one of our best ways to get more fruit and veg for less,” says Oonagh. “They offer great value on fresh produce, with five affordable options available each week.

“We’re also making it easier to find affordable fruit and veg in our Express stores, through our Fresh 3 deals there, and by offering a bigger range of fresh produce.”

Clubcard members can reap other benefits too, says Oonagh. “With Clubcard Challenges on fresh, frozen and tinned fruit, veg and pulses, we’re committed to helping customers get more of the healthy food they need for less.

“We’ve also committed, where possible, to ensuring that a healthier version of a product won’t cost more than the standard version.”

Examples include Finest Greek yogurt, where the 0% fat version comes at the same price.

Doing it for the kids

A healthy diet in childhood is the foundation of a great start in life, and that’s why Tesco is helping to build lifelong healthy habits with support both in schools and in store.

“Our Free Fruit for Kids in-store scheme is another a great way to help children get more of their 5-a-day,” says Oonagh. “It allows kids to pick up a free piece of fruit in store during the school holidays, and we’ve given away more than four million apples so far. Also, our Kids Eat Free scheme runs across the summer holidays in our Tesco Cafes and Coffee Shops.

“Beyond our stores, our Fruit & Veg for Schools programme helps children and young people make better choices,” adds Oonagh. “Through the programme, we’ve donated more than 10 million portions of fresh fruit and veg to schools across the UK to date, increasing access to healthy food and helping children to discover a love for fresh produce.”

With these initiatives, Tesco hopes to play its part in building healthier communities – at a time when it matters most.

2. Clubcard Prices

Lower Clubcard Prices and offers are available on fruit and veg. Customers can also earn extra Clubcard points through Clubcard Challenges by buying frozen and tinned fruit and veg, beans and pulses.

3. Fresh 5 and Fresh 3 deals

Offering five affordable, regularly changing choices of seasonal fruit and veg at great-value prices in larger stores. Three options are offered in Express stores, making it super simple to stock up on healthy essentials.

4. Aldi Price Match
