Need to know: Nationwide issues ‘concerned’ alert as £745 leaves customers’ accounts
- Nationwide Building Society has recorded a 9% rise in customer gambling spending in January compared to the same month last year.
- The building society’s data shows gambling transactions also increased by 7%, with top spenders averaging £745 per month. Nationwide is raising awareness about problem gambling ahead of a busy sporting calendar this year.
- A survey of 2,000 gamblers found two-thirds expect to bet more in 2026 due to major sporting events. However, around a fifth of gamblers are unaware that banks offer gambling blocks on accounts.
- Kathryn Townsend, head of customer vulnerability for Nationwide, said: “With a year of major sporting events ahead, we’re concerned that more people could find themselves gambling more than they can afford.”
- Nationwide offers a 72-hour cooling-off period for gambling blocks to help customers stay in control. The building society emphasises that help is available without judgment for those facing gambling harm.
