Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was last seen in public during the Duchess of Kent’s funeral last year where he and an apparently “furious” Prince William appeared to exchange words
Prince William last publicly engaged with his uncle Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in 2025 as pressure mounted on the former Duke of York over his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.
The royal family has increasingly distanced itself from Andrew over the course of several years as further details about his friendship with Epstein came to light. It has now culminated in Andrew being arrested today on suspicion of misconduct in public office after details of his correspondences with the late billionaire were laid bare in the recent Epstein Files release.
Andrew remains in custody following his arrest at Sandringham. The former Duke has consistently and strongly denied any wrongdoing regarding his connection to Epstein.

As pressure mounted on Andrew last year, he stepped out in public for the Duchess of Kent’s funeral. It was one of his last public appearances and caused a stir among attendees when he arrived alongside at Westminster Abbey with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson.
Following the service, Andrew appeared to have been snubbed by William as he attempted to engage in conversation, which reportedly left the future king in a “furious” mood. At the time, Andrew was seen laughing and smiling as other top royals appeared to be in a more sombre mood.
A lip reader previously disclosed what Andrew allegedly said to William during their brief encounter. Jeremy Freeman said the now former Duke of York commented: “…we had a lovely time in those days, didn’t we…I remember those days.”
Royal author Andrew Lownie previously told The Mirror William was “furious” after he was caught off guard during the service. He added: “He has been at pains to distance himself from his uncle and not be photographed with him.
“He believes his father has not dealt with him with sufficient firmness and that Andrew – and Sarah Ferguson – have done much to undermine the good work of other members of the Royal Family.”
The tense encounter revealed a growing rift between Andrew and other members of the royal family. That culminated today with an official statement from Buckingham Palace that appeared to distance the King from his younger brother.
“I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office,” King Charles III said. “What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities.
“In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation. Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.
“As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all. Charles R.”
