An avalanche has reportedly swept three people away at a ski resort.
The avalanche struck the Aosta Valley in northwestern Italy at around 11am CET (10am GMT) on Sunday, reportedly hitting three off-piste skiers in Val Veny, part of the Courmayeur ski resort. Aosta Valley and Guardia di Finanza mountain rescue teams are currently at the scene trying to find those caught in the avalanche.
Teams are surveying the area from three helicopters and searching on the ground using mobile phone signals and an avalanche rescue transceiver, La Repubblica reports.
Today, the Aosta Valley is under a level three avalanche warning on a scale of one to five.
“The old wind-packed snow accumulations can release spontaneously or from the passage of a single winter sports enthusiast,” warned AINEVA, the association that issues avalanche warnings.
